Description
The stone is translucent and almost colourless, and the carving is cut into its back so the face floats inside the material rather than sitting on top of it.
It is a bearded mask — heavy brows, open mouth, hair falling either side. Small orange flecks are trapped in the chalcedony and one sits on the lower lip.
The gold mount is modern and plain: a bezel, two tapered shoulders, a round wire hoop. The stone is the antiquity; the ring around it is not, and we say so.
